A farmer was living with his daughter Aditi, who was in Grade Three. The farmer owned a large orchard including number of fruit trees. One day he saw a barren mango tree. It didn’t bare any fruit. Aditi said to her father, “Baba, look at this tree. There are so many nests in which birds are living. It also has a big hive, with number of bees.” Farmer replied, “It is of no use. It doesn’t bear any fruit. We must cut it down.”
Next day the farmer decided to cut the tree. He started using his axe. Aditi was upset, she didn’t want the tree to be cut. Suddenly a bird pleaded, “Please don’t cut this tree. If you cut it down, we will have no shelter.” The farmer replied, “I am sorry, I can’t help you. It will be better if you leave this tree.” He continued to cut the tree. Aditi could not bear it. She said, “Baba, this tree is a shelter for many bird families including baby birds and bees. We should not destroy their nests, please don’t cut this tree. The trees give us oxygen and shade which is important to human beings. What will we do if someone breaks our house? Where would we go? We should not cut this tree.” The farmer realised the importance of trees. He took back his decision. Aditi felt happy. All birds started chirping with happiness.
